The baptism of the Lord is a time for us all to reflect on our own baptism. For many of us, we can’t remember the actual event or the details of the celebration of our baptism. We can, however, reflect on the meaning and impact that our baptism has on our life today. Our baptism was the start of a lifelong journey with Christ and with the community of Christians worldwide. Our baptism mirrors the baptism of Jesus, identifying with all of
humanity, our purpose and our salvation. The baptism of the Lord was the beginning of a change in our hearts. It allows our spirits to be filled with the life of heaven.
After he was baptised with water, Jesus prayed. During this time, the heavens opened, and the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus, and God’s blessing could be heard. God’s intimate voice and blessing at the baptism of Jesus is filled with love. The love of a tender, compassionate and faithful father. Just as God loves Jesus, so he loves us. Just as the Holy Spirit came upon Jesus, so it comes upon us. God’s love is everlasting, and His faithfulness is
eternal.
Jesus prayed after his baptism. Prayer matters deeply to Jesus. We can join Jesus in prayer. We can know him and his presence among us, and we can be more like him in this world. When Jesus prays, God speaks to him. Prayer is just as important as the baptism of spirit and fire. Jesus continues to pray for us now.
Let us lift our prayers to him.
