In this account, Luke highlights characteristics about Jesus that clearly distinguish him from the rest of the crowd, despite being part of everyone who had been baptized. John the Baptist addresses the expectant crowd he is baptizing by making the point that Jesus who is coming is more powerful than anyone can imagine and that Jesus will baptize them with the Holy Spirit and fire.
John is humble and in awe of Jesus. He devotes his entire life to serving God and following Christ’s ministry, but he knows and feels that he cannot compare himself to Jesus or his works. The baptism of water that John offers addresses the present-day, whereas the baptism that Jesus offers is for the present, future, and life hereafter.
The interesting part of this account is how this powerful Jesus, as described by John, has been among the people, is described as one of them, has been baptized like them, but is almost lost or hidden among the people. How wonderful that someone of Jesus calibre would be just like one of us, among us but not demanding anything of us, living with us, interacting with us, loving us and not being judgemental. That God allowed his only son to be as
one of us so that we may identify with Jesus, know that he has walked our path and lived our lives is beyond amazing. It shows the depth of love that God has for each one of us, the understanding and compassion he has for us.
The baptism of the Holy Spirit and water is another beautiful gift to us from our Lord.
