God calls ordinary people to discipleship. Simon Peter and his fishermen friends were simple men. They went about their day minding their own business, catching fish, cleaning nets, doing what they would normally do. Then, Jesus comes along and turns their lives upside down. He changes everything!
Here, the thing to notice is that Jesus takes them as they are. There is no interview or selection process. Jesus is not perturbed by their sinfulness or unworthiness. In fact, he comforts them in their fear and calls them to this new mission of catching people. Throughout Scripture, we are shown that human sin and failure are not a hindrance to God. He calls all people, imperfect people, to do his work. He calls them with all their faults,
as they are, and then he shapes them and moulds them into his faithful servants.
We, too, are called by God, just as we are, ordinary people, sinful people. Many times, we ignore the call because we feel inadequate or because we feel that the timing is not right for us. Nothing is done in our time but in God's. We need to trust that he will walk alongside us on this journey that he has planned and mapped out for us.
How often are we sceptical of God's call because it seems impractical or silly or crazy even?
How often do we follow our own opinions that we are unsuccessful instead of following Jesus?
Do you trust and follow Jesus out of your comfort zone?
Are you willing to allow Jesus to change everything in your life?
