Just breathe! This is quite an ironic statement to make given the fact that we all breathe without thinking, it is automatic, involuntary and something we have been doing since birth. I find myself repeating this statement often, to myself and to my children. Taking a deep breath can be calming and gives that needed pause to reassess a stressful situation.
Breathing correctly can also alter the patterns in the brain and give our nervous system a reset. The breath is a life-giving force that both energises and relaxes the body but many people don’t breathe well, unfortunately.
The word breath and verses about breathing appear often in the Bible. In Genesis we hear that God breathed into the nostrils of Adam and Eve to bring them to life. The breath is life, physically and spiritually. Breath comes straight from God, it is God’s Spirit, the Holy Spirit. Jesus breathed on his disciples, his breath filled their nostrils and gave them life, a new life of spreading the
good news. A new life with the Holy Spirit flowing through them and in them. We too can breathe in the life of the Holy Spirit with love to nourish our soul.
To breath spiritually, we should take in each and every moment that we experience with love and gratitude in order to energise our soul and to enrich our spiritual journey, a breath of mind. A mindful inhalation of positive energy, love and peace and an exhalation of stress, anxiety and negative emotions. A mindful appreciation for the breath of God that is within us
eternally.
Today, I invite you to take deep belly breaths, to fill your lungs with air and to breathe in the blessings that God has for you. Be mindful when you breathe, thanking God for each breath and the life it brings you.
