The Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, are a community in dialogue. Jesus tells us that the
Father sends the Son who sends the Spirit. Between the three persons there is constant
communication. It is their communication that leads to the ever deepening of their mutual
love and union.
We are, by nature, created in the image and likeness of God, dialogical and communicative.
We create the world through communication in verbal and non-verbal ways. The way we
build things, the art we create and the words we speak are all forms of communication. Our
communication is an exchange of information and feeling through words, symbols, signs and
behaviours. When we are communicating at our best we are always deepening mutual love
and union with others. When we communicate in a Trinitarian way, we are building trust
and community. We are being life-giving to ourselves and to others.
We live in a world where we have the most advanced communication systems, more reach
and power than any other era. Zoom, Skype and WhatsApp etc. are all tools we can use to
communicate information, feelings and build community. Yet, at times, it seems as if these
tools are used to sow mistrust, hate and division.
As we contemplate the Trinity, we are drawn into looking at what the Godhead teaches us
about living life to the full. We are invited to contemplate the quality of our communication.
We can do this by looking at the fruits of our daily interaction with others. We do this by
paying attention, at the end of the day, to how we were left feeling by the interactions that
we have had during the day. We learn about the effectiveness of our communication by
taking time to reflect on how we communicated.
Take time today to reflect on your communication with others. Are you left feeling
consoled by yours words, actions and behaviours? Put yourself in the shoes of those you
communicated with, how do you think they were left by your words, actions and
behaviours? How do you use words, with care and sensitivity? In what ways can you see the
fruits of your communication; look for traces of deepening trust, love and union with others.
You might want to speak to God about the challenges you know you have communicating in
some relationships in your life. Ask the Trinity to teach you how to communicate in such a
way that you live in the same loving union they do.
