Since the beginning of time God has been revealing our future to us. Before the coming of Jesus, we are introduced to people who perform similar acts that Jesus does whilst living amongst us as a human being.
Genesis 14:18-20 speaks about King Melchizedek offering bread and wine and God’s blessings to Abram. We know too that we receive God’s blessing and that with our love and following his way, we bless God in return. Let us remember to be grateful and to give thanks for his unending love and the graces he continually bestows on us.
Psalm 110:1-4 Jesus is the “priest forever in the line of Melchizedek” and he will rule from the new Jerusalem. Prophetic indeed.
1 Corinthians 11:23-26 refers to Jesus, our king, blessing and transforming bread and wine, making it a sign of his body and blood.
In the miracle of feeding the five thousand, Jesus takes the loaves and the fish and he blesses them and breaks them and then gives them to the disciples. The leftover bread filled twelve baskets…a basket each. The bread symbolises the spiritual feeding that they would bring about in the near future in their own ministry but also symbolises God’s generosity. God always has more for
us.
Jesus showed the crowd and his disciples that his promises and his word can be trusted, that they are real. Jesus, in this narrative, also shows the people that he can meet their needs, alone. The disciples searched for food to share with the people and yet all they needed was in front of them, Jesus himself.
Today, I invite you to reflect on the promises of God in your own life. Have you been left wanting or have you experienced the generosity of God?
What more do you need or is Jesus enough?
