What makes a person rich? I remember that, as a young boy, one of my greatest desires was to be a rich man when I grew up. I wanted to be a millionaire, to drive the fanciest cars, to live in a mansion and to be able to go on holidays anywhere and at any time. I read books like, Rich Dad Poor Dad, and dreamed of all the businesses and investment
portfolios I would run.
My life (perhaps fortunately) has not followed this path. But, I wonder, would I really be rich if it had? What is it that my life consists of today? What is the richness in my life?
I have begun to notice that material possessions do not bring me any lasting joy. Listening to the birds sing their songs as the sun rises, going for walks in the park, sharing moments of closeness with family and friends, offering my time and energy in service to others, and periods of prayerful stillness consistently bring a smile to my face and lasting warmth
to my heart. My relationship with Jesus has helped me to become more aware of God’s presence in the ordinary events of my life. I may not have the material wealth that I desired as a boy, but I think I have encountered something more precious.
Take a moment to reflect on your own life and desires. What richness do you seek? What are the things that really bring you joy? Talk to God about these desires, hopes, dreams and joys and take some time in silence to listen to what God says to you about them.
