Our reward is in heaven. Our treasure is in heaven. Yet, here on earth, we accumulate wealth and possessions because we are insecure or as status symbols or because we are afraid of having nothing.
In many instances, we have way more than we need. Jesus calls
us to sell our belongings and to give alms. In many cases, we are loath to do this. There are many that we can help and yet we don’t. In South Africa, there is a destitute person on nearly every street corner. The economic crisis in our country has led to starving and homeless people. As Christians, surely it is our duty to share what we have, to make those with less than us more comfortable by sharing a meal or offering a coat or a blanket?
We have the promise of inexhaustible treasure in heaven. We need to place our focus here, to store up the treasures of heaven rather than those of the earth. Treasures in heaven will bring love and grace whereas those on earth could possibly bring heartache and a false sense of security.
Today, I invite you to determine where your treasure and your heart is. Are earthly or heavenly treasures
more important to you?
