In these verses, Jesus promises blessings for those who wait for his return. Our expectant waiting for him will result in the reward of blessedness. Jesus will serve those waiting for him. In other words, Jesus will serve his servants on his return. This is an absolutely amazing reward! On the second coming of Jesus we expect that he
will be leading us, not serving us.
We must remember that Jesus came to serve and so we should view serving as a privilege and an honour, not as demeaning. We can look at leading in a similar way. Leading is a way of serving and so, leadership can be an opportunity for others to serve you, but more importantly, as we read in the Scriptures, leadership is a form of service (Mark 10:42-45). Jesus is both a leader and a servant
and he shows us how to lead by serving. Jesus came to serve and he will do so again.
When we invite people to dinner, they are usually our friends and we go to great lengths to entertain them and to make sure that they are comfortable, we serve them. Jesus will do the same. The servants will be called friends, they will dine at his table and he will serve them. Jesus is showing us that he is not above being a servant and so
we must learn this lesson: serving is our glory.
We must wait patiently for the return of our Lord as his timeline is not consistent with ours. But we will be justly rewarded with his blessings for they are promised, he has given his word.
I invite you today, as you wait for his coming and his blessings, to serve others and to lead others in
service.
