Our attitude to the second coming of Jesus is based on our response to his first coming. If we have accepted that Jesus came as Lord and Saviour, then we will be eagerly awaiting his return.
This week’s text emphasises the certainty that Jesus will return, but the
timing of his coming is unclear. This is a fact that we should focus on, God will accomplish what God has promised.
Jesus told his disciples that he would return in a time that we would not expect him. As a result, we must be in a constant state of readiness. It will take discipline and dedication but this is what is required of us as disciples of Jesus.
We must remember that much of what we do on earth is what we will do “in heaven”. We will worship God and be serving God and others as we do now. What we do and the way in which we do it, now on earth will continue then.
This passage also reminds us to take responsibility for our faith, to be true to our faith. “Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded
of the person entrusted with more.” (vs 48) Those of us who have heard the gospel have a responsibility to act, not to reject it. We have had the privilege of greater knowledge and learning, the opportunity to study Scripture and so our obligation to our Christian commitment is greater (than those non-believers) and our account will be too.
