Jesus is very straight and realistic about crossing swords with evil and battling sin in the world around us, isn’t he? As we struggle with evil and strive to conform our natures and lives to Christ and his saints, we will have people against us, be hurt, and suffer in all
sorts of ways, not least being ridiculed, accused, and even our sanity being doubted. As a result, we will become disillusioned at times. However, Jesus tells us clearly how to meet these challenges; 'Rejoice and be glad', 'your reward in heaven will be great', and, most importantly, 'you are not alone; you are in the company of all the saints who have gone before you and now live.'
Returning to the example of the chrysalis earlier this week, we know that it is the struggle of the delicate, vulnerable, but beautiful butterfly to free itself from the chrysalis that makes it strong and gives it life. This 'struggle' takes a while, but it gives the sun time to dry the butterfly's wings and warm and strengthen them.
So, how do you react to the opposition and 'persecution'?
Do you grumble, complain and want to give up? Or
do you think upon your blessedness in this respect and bear the burden with fortitude and patience?
Do you have a well of joy in the Lord deep down inside that enables you to rejoice and be glad?
Do you look
to the example of other Christian friends you know or have known for your perseverance in tribulation? Do you ask for their support and prayers?
Do you provide loving support to others persecuted for their faith?
This calls for deep and honest reflection, leading to your prayer today.
