We do not know when Jesus will return, and it does not really matter when; what matters is that he will return. It also matters that we will be ready when he does. Indeed the best way to prepare for Jesus' return is to live in a close relationship with him daily. Jesus makes himself known to us in various ways through the work of the Holy Spirit within and around us. We need to be willing to recognise and
receive his loving presence.
St Ignatius encouraged us to develop a rhythm of prayer that enables us to enter and end our day with an attitude of being open to Jesus.
By taking a moment each morning to open ourselves to a sense of living in the loving gaze of God, we are consciously anticipating being able to sense his attending to us. Some refer to this prayer as the Act of the Presence of God. As we step into our day having consciously turned to God, our spirit is open to God's stirring and guidance and love. It is both mystery and grace how God touches our lives through the words and actions of others who know God too. Sometimes God uses things we read, spiritual or secular, to draw our attention to
something. Creation is also a powerful communicator of God's abiding presence. And, of course, those gentle whispers within our thoughts are God guiding our attitude and actions for our good. Whatever draws us closer to Jesus and increases our faith, hope and love may be inspired by the Holy Spirit.
At the end of each day, St Ignatius encourages us to do an Examen of our day. This is a time to look at when we felt a particular sense of Jesus with us, for which we give thanks. We should also be aware of those times when Jesus felt far away, and we ask for help to live more closely with him.
How conscious are you of Jesus being present in your day? How might you become more attentive to Jesus or deepen your relationship with him?
