The Lord gifts us faith; when we believe in God and trust in his word that endures forever, He invites us to action. James 2:26 tells us that faith without service or deeds is dead.
Service must flow from our faith. The Lord invites us to say yes to him through deeds every moment of our lives. Are we aware of these invitations? Every place in our communities, churches and workplaces is a space to honour God through good deeds.
Bringing honour and glory to God might have us believe we are too important, that God cannot do
His works on His own and that without us, the mission or the good deeds will not be done. This is pride, and we see this in our parishes, where those we elected either in the PPC or the different groups and sodalities boast about their work. We can see the pride in ourselves if we are honest enough. We take up spaces in the Church, ministry, or our workplaces, then make the mission about ourselves, sideling others and telling them how important we are, thinking that we are
irreplaceable.
The Lord is inviting us to humility “we are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do” this should be our attitude and speech. All our good deeds are through God; he makes us worthy to serve Him.
I
invite you to spend a few moments reflecting on all the good works of faith you have accomplished as yourself or a group you might belong to at work, in the community or at your parish, the works you can remember. Give thanks to the Lord for these good deeds. Recall also those moments where you let pride get in the way of good works of faith, ask the Lord for pardon and the wisdom to know when you are acting from a place of pride instead of
humility.
