This week's Gospel story revolves around Jesus' encounter with a man called Zacchaeus.
Zacchaeus had, by all accounts, enjoyed a successful career. He had worked
his way up to the position of the chief tax collector, so he was competent at achieving his job specifications. Furthermore, this position meant he was comfortable and had all the worldly belongings he needed. Therefore, one would assume that success and wealth would have left Zacchaeus feeling content.
And yet, Zacchaeus was a miserable man. Zacchaeus was lonely, an outcast. No one respected or loved him. Wealth may bring worldly comforts but does not necessarily comfort the heart. He had heard rumours about Jesus and wondered what Jesus was really like.
What is it you long for
the most at this moment? A successful career? A comfortable life? To be loved and respected? To be accepted into the community in which you live?
Whatever your deepest desire is, spend some time opening this up to God.
Even if Jesus feels far away, let your heart speak your Saviour.
