The Lord has gifted us so much that there can never be a time when we cannot share what the Lord has given us. We always have something to share with others.
We often want to share things we have overused and no longer need or want. We then freely let others use them or have them. We often give the poor what has been left too long on our shelves, almost reaching sell by date or after the best-before date. Or we give away our old
clothes when they are no longer the desired fashion or the quality. Is this what the Lord calls us to share with the poor?
There are many oppressed people, yet we choose who to help and
shelter. We justify these choices by saying: “At least we are helping or doing something; surely we can’t reach everybody”. But what about other groups of oppressed people?
The Lord tells
us not to turn our backs on our own. Who are our own? Are they only limited to our family members and friends? We look out for our friends and family because it is right and what God calls us to do. If God is our Father, as we claim, then it is not enough that we only care for our kin. We are invited today to watch and have the backs of all, like Jesus, who says: “My mother and brother are those who hear and do God’s word.” The Lord’s word invites us to love one another despite our differences.
When we love one another, this will lead to serving each other.
I invite you today to spend some time reflecting on how and with whom you share God’s gift. Then, ask for the grace to be open to serving
and helping those that you have deemed not your own.
