Salt has many different uses, but we are most
familiar with two: bringing taste and preservation. We use salt to give food flavour and to preserve food from turning and becoming spoiled.
The Lord tells us today that we are the
salt of the earth. This is encouraging and propels us into a life of service. We are invited to become tasteful, offer life, and bring goodness to everybody we encounter in our lives. Like salt, we are to preserve and maintain the message of the good news as we serve others. We are not to distort the gospel by judging or being less intolerant of those different to us as we carry out this life of service.
Many experiences have left us wounded, and the evil spirit uses our wounds to deceive us, making us believe we are unworthy of bringing goodness to earth and planting seeds of doubt that lead us to think we have lost taste. The Lord dispels that; he says we are the salt.
Therefore, we will always maintain our godliness for as long as we are in a relationship with the Lord.
I invite you to spend time today reflecting on what it means to be the salt of the earth and how
you bring “God flavours” to others. How, in your service, do you help others taste godliness?
