The scriptures for this week have challenged us to rethink how we live and how we love.
The two bookend scriptures, “Be holy because God is holy” (Lev 19:2) of Monday and today’s “Be perfect as your Heavenly Father is perfect”, have sandwiched a rich discussion on what it is like to live a life of Christian love.
What is the point of all this?
When we live a life of Christian love, we become what we were created to be. Humanity was created to be like God (Gen 1:26). God works tirelessly for the good of all people, whether we are sinners or saints. We are like God when we love unconditionally, forgive readily and work conscientiously for the good of all people.
As we continue our journey through Lent, perhaps the word we need to hold foremost in our minds is LOVE. Maybe we need to come before God daily and with the help of the Holy Spirit to unpack reflectively the
following:
When was I most aware of LOVE today?
When was I least aware of LOVE today?
As we look at these questions, let us identify where and why this was so.
Was I receiving or giving LOVE to or from other people?
Was I receiving or showing God’s LOVE?
If LOVE felt absent, what seemed to get in the way or cause a ‘blocking’ of love?
