The scriptures are silent about what happened in the three months that Mary spent with Elizabeth up until the birth of John. Perhaps, though, we can imagine it. There would have been time for many conversations in the same house. Like any pregnant mothers, they
would have enjoyed having someone with whom to share the ups and downs of pregnancy.
In addition to the ordinary conversations, while preparing meals or doing things around the house, they must have had significant discussions about their experiences of God, trying together to make sense of the extraordinary experiences of the past
months.
The inexplicable and the unimaginable are happening, and they live in the grace of that unfolding reality. Sharing their inner experience with another person who is also reeling from unexpected grace is a gift. A needed gift to be able to process what is happening around them and
within them as their babies grow.
Doubtless, they sat with significant questions: Why me? Am I ready for this responsibility? How will God's plan unfold? What will the future demand of me?
As we draw near to Christmas, what questions are you holding? Are you grappling with an emerging aspect of your call? Are you trying to sense how best to respond to God in our challenging and unpredictable times? Are there gifts, relationships, and unexpected blessings that have shaped and impacted the way you see God now?
It may be an opportune time for a significant conversation about the things that really matter. There may be a close friend or family member you could have a discussion with: someone who is also seeking to discover and live God’s invitation in their lives.
Or you may feel drawn to imagine when Mary stays with Elizabeth. Join them for a conversation at the kitchen table about God's actions in their lives and yours. Let them be friends with you as you seek to discover what gift of God you are carrying for the world as we approach Christmas.
