When we set out on a long journey as a family, we always have snacks and drinks in the car
and some sweets for those of us with a sweet tooth. We will also break for lunch and a rest from being in the car too long.
Jesus had been on a journey. He was tired, hungry and thirsty, and he needed a break. It would have been difficult to carry snacks and drinks as he walked, so Jacob’s well would have been a welcome sight and place to stop. Here he could rest, stretch his legs and drink while waiting for his disciples to return with something to eat.
After a long journey, I am not inclined to, nor do I have the energy to engage in deep conversation. Even small talk can be tiresome. Here we see Jesus engage in a
life-changing conversation with the Samaritan woman. Jesus will be embarking on a journey of a different nature with her. One that will bring her to a new understanding of herself and God. She will ask for the water that Jesus gives, and her journey as a witness will start.
What journey are you on today? Do you need to stop, rest and drink? Will you engage in conversation with Jesus? Are you ready to start or continue on your journey with Jesus?
