Jesus broke convention and conversed with this woman, a Samaritan. He engaged with her
personally, discussing her life and all she had done. He knew everything about her and yet, did not mention sin. Nor did he encourage her to change her ways. He simply saw her.
This woman had some knowledge of the scriptures and was aware of the coming of the Messiah. She also knew about the Jews and who and where they worshipped. Having been seen by Jesus, she could see him and understood him to be a prophet and the Messiah. Their conversation changed to focus on worship and the Holy Spirit.
Jesus and the Samaritan woman developed a relationship in a very short time. He understood her, and she understood him. She came to know and believe that to worship God in the
wanted and expected way is to worship in Spirit, the same Spirit that Jesus was offering in the form of living water.
The Samaritan woman had begun to see who Jesus was; she had been given the gift of truth and new life. She had, unknowingly, become a witness to God’s great love and gift of the Holy Spirit.
This text highlights the importance of relationships with God and each other. Knowing who Jesus is and encountering and experiencing Jesus leads us to be a witness to his truth and love. It is more about who we know than what we know. This woman experienced, then believed, and
then shared the good news.
Can you recall a personal encounter or experience with Jesus? In what ways can you be a witness of
Christ? Who can you witness to today?
