The Samaritan woman came to the well to fill her jar. But the text tells us that she left her
jar at the well and went into the town. What about the water she needed?
The woman arrived looking for ordinary
drinking water from the well. Water that would quench her thirst and be used for cooking and cleaning. She would draw the water from the well and fill her jar to the brim, perhaps even to overflowing. She abandoned her jar next to Jacob’s well.
Her encounter with Jesus filled her with the living water of the Holy Spirit. She had come to the well thirstier than she knew and left knowing she would never be really thirsty again. She didn’t need the water jar as she was filled with flowing, living water that was bubbling inside her. The Samaritan woman was overflowing with truth and love, and she
spread the word about Jesus, bringing the cleansing water of the Spirit to all to make us and all things new. She brought Jesus’s gift of the Spirit and poured it into the hearts of believers.
This text reminds us to be witnesses, as Jesus called us to be. This woman testifies to her city. She tells them what she knows and calls them to come and see for themselves.
What water are you needing to be filled with? Will you come today and see for yourself?
