Jesus uses the image of farming to teach us about the kingdom of God. Plenty of work
must be done, and many people are needed to help build the kingdom. However, only a few people are ready and willing to do the work required. I have often heard this scripture refer to the shortage of vocations to religious life and priesthood. This is not incorrect because the invitation to participate in building the kingdom of God is open to all people.
One aspect we often overlook while working to build God’s kingdom is love. Sometimes we do not embody the love of God that we claim to have experienced. How we treat other groups that are different to us is shocking. Look at how some members of the church treat LGBTQI+ and
divorced people. Others cover up corruption by people in their social circles. Notice, too, how racism and race-related issues are dealt with.
It is as though we have put love,
especially the love of God, into a box. We operate as if there are places or people who, by our judgement, do not deserve God’s love. Yet, we embody this love of God when we are dealing with our own families and friends. There are not enough people in society to model the love of God for us. Maybe we should ask ourselves if we model God’s love to everyone we encounter.
Spend a few moments today asking for the grace to embody God’s love and be better at showing love to others.
