Jesus’ words about family in this text seem severe. However, they look less harsh if we
consider them an invitation to put our lives in order and prioritise Jesus. Loving God first doesn’t mean that we love our family less. On the contrary, loving God first means that we love our family more in a selfless and life-giving way, a way that is free of deception and illusion.
Walking with Jesus leads us to life and freedom, but we must remember that sacrifice and suffering are also part of the journey. If we are only invested in ourselves, we are bound to fall. This gospel text tells us we are on the road to destruction if we seek only ourselves.
Through self-giving, we find life with God, our family, our community, and the world.
God’s will is that we kindle
relationships, create a network of love and move out of ourselves in service and reconciliation. Jesus tells us that sacrifice and reflection are needed to transform our relationships and responsibilities and how we relate to others and face the world's challenges.
A way of life with Jesus is grounded in love and mercy. His words are clear. He is claiming a special place in our lives, more important than the place our loved ones hold.
What choices have you made, or are you making worthy of a life with Jesus?
