Jesus calls us to choose whether or not we are willing to forsake everything, trust him, and
follow him so that we may live with him. He calls us to this high standard through the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus asks us to choose him, put him above all our other interests, find ourselves in him and rely on him as our sole provider.
Following Jesus is worth all we part with for our good and his glory. St Paul considered all he accomplished and achieved nothing compared to knowing and following Christ. His choice was Christ, and nothing else mattered. “But whatever were gains to me, I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the
surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ …” (Philippians 3:7-8)
Through Jesus' crucifixion, God deserves to be first in our lives. God desires this of us. Nothing must surpass our love for the Lord. Jesus bought our lives at a high cost, we are his, and when we take up our cross, we choose Jesus, honour him with our choices, and take hold of the life God has planned for us.
