This text forms part of what is
known as the Farewell Discourse of Jesus. Jesus is preparing his disciples for his departure. In John’s Gospel, this text is found just before the arrest and crucifixion of Jesus. However, the lectionary places Jesus’ prayer at the end of the Easter season. It is directed to God, and Jesus refers to glory, knowledge and unity. In this text, John shows how the role of glory refers to how God is made known to us, his people.
Jesus glorified God throughout his life through his miracles, ministry, grace and obedience. He completed the work on earth that God had given him, taught what God wanted him to teach, and performed the healing and works God wanted him to do. Jesus revealed God’s power through his faithfulness and glory.
The time Jesus has been preparing for has come. His work is done; he has been obedient and, in doing so, has glorified God. What he will experience next will give glory to God as
the focal point of salvation by grace through faith.
At the time of his death, Jesus prayed that God would restore his pre-incarnate
glory so that he might glorify God in heaven. Jesus enjoyed heavenly glory before coming to earth; he shared honour, majesty, power and love with his father. Jesus will return to his father and this glory. A glory that we cannot understand but hope to experience in the future.
Consider which of your thoughts, words and action bring glory to God. In what ways can you bring glory to God today?
