This passage is a beautiful conclusion to this week’s reflection on community. Jesus promises that he is present in our “togetherness”.
The Church exists for many reasons. It preaches the Gospel, and it strives to
promote justice. The Christian community provides a way in which we can journey towards God. It makes Christ present to us. Jesus is substantially present in our gatherings in his name. St. Paul describes the Church as the “body of Christ”.
There are many ways to gather in Christ’s name. In our liturgical worship, we reflect upon God’s word, celebrate our communion
with thanksgiving, and sing and dance to express our faith. We also gather for faith-sharing and spiritual conversation in our various Christian communities. We have many youth groups, spiritual movements and sodalities that provide gathering opportunities. We can also gather in informal settings. I have had some of the most profound spiritual conversations sitting until late at night with youth group friends at McDonald's. In all of these, Jesus is present.
Jesus is not only present to those who participate in the gathering. Our Christian gatherings become witnesses of Christ’s love and make him present to those around us as well.
Our gathering needn’t be large; two or three are enough. Jesus delights in our togetherness. He offers community as a gift and a means by which we
can encounter him. It is also a means by which we witness Christ’s presence and love to others. Let us take up the challenge of building good Christian communities. Let us also be on the lookout for God present in these gatherings.
What are the ways in which you gather in Christ’s name? Are you aware of his presence in these gatherings? Are your communities a
witness of Christ’s presence to others?
