The king invited people at the last minute, because the people that he had invited earlier or in advance did not want to come to his son’s wedding feast. These are the people that have had time to prepare themselves for the feast, people that have had time to get out their wedding garments ready for the feast.
I know many people today who would never honour a late invitation to the wedding because of all the preparations that have to be done before the wedding.
So then maybe the king should not be bothered by what people are wearing, especially those that he invited at the last
minute to the wedding. The king comes in to where the feast is taking place to greet his guest and is disappointed to find a man who is not dressed in a wedding garment. Maybe it’s important to reflect on the wedding garment and what this could mean for our life of faith.
What is the wedding garment?
I would like to suggest that the wedding garment is our attitude when we get to the celebration. Can I enjoy the feast joyfully with those that have been invited too? Am I open to being touched by the presence of God and let myself be transformed by him? Am I open to enter into conversation with the Lord or am I reduced to silence like the man who is asked where his wedding garments is.
The Lord invited us into conversation with him, he calls us his ‘friends. What response are you making to the Lord today to his question “my friend, how is it that you come in here without a wedding garment?”
Spend a few moments today making your response to
him.
