What does Jesus teach us in this text?
He tells us to listen and obey the Word of God and to practice what the Word says. He warns against practising bad behaviour and religion. Jesus defines bad religion as
putting others down and imposing rules on people that cause them to suffer. The people who do this to others are basking in their own power and glory without considering the consequences of their actions. This type of practice draws attention to themselves, which they love.
We have many of these types of churches and preachers popping up worldwide. On a recent trip
to Botswana, my friends there called these churches “fire fire” churches. They make all sorts of promises, but at what cost, usually financial, the people they trap? The preachers' fake righteousness can be seen in their dress, vehicles, and flashy lifestyles. Their preaching is a show, and they crave the attention and power it brings them. It is always more about them than it is about God.
Jesus teaches us not to be like these men and women. He forbids us from challenging God’s position and from following anyone other than God. Jesus teaches us to be humble before God and others. He teaches us to be content in our faith and service regardless of what people think. This attitude and way of life will be fruitful in the Kingdom of Heaven.
