Transitions are not always easy to navigate. Perhaps this new year brings a new job, home, school or even church. A change from what you are used to. Later this year, we will have elections, and there will possibly be changes to our government. Letting go of what we know and are comfortable with can be difficult. Adjusting to new circumstances can be challenging.
Reading this text makes us aware of transitions or changes. Until now, John the Baptist has been travelling around and telling people of the Messiah who will come. People have been following John on his travels. When Jesus walks by, and John points him out, those with him turn and follow Jesus. John has fulfilled his role, and now he needs to stand back so that his followers can become disciples of Christ.
When Jesus asks the disciples what they are looking for and want, a transition happens in them. They must reassess their current way of life and make a change to follow Jesus. They have been looking and waiting for a teacher and a leader. Now, they need to make the transition from seekers to followers.
In the final part of the text, we see the transition from Simon to Peter. The change in name and also the change to become a follower of
Jesus.
As Christ-followers, we also experience a transition. We receive new life, a new name as God’s “beloved” or “child of God” and we experience the infinite love and grace of our Lord.
How has being a disciple of Jesus changed your life? Who can you share this transformation with today?
