We can also see this text as a call to conversion, a conversion of our thoughts, actions, and all we are and do. Jesus is calling us to be and do better. St. Ignatius Loyola spoke of the ‘magis’ - that which is greater or more. Jesus invites us to be greater, to realise our full potential.
Jesus chose and called each of his disciples
personally. In the same way, God calls us, by name, to follow Jesus. If we accept the invitation, God will use us in the vocations, careers, and areas where we are needed. This may be as a priest, teacher, doctor, plumber, or even a parent.
Our inner, personal conversion comes when we accept the call and follow Jesus. When we choose and strive to do our best, we experience a conversion. We do not live or work for our benefit but rather
to glorify God. When we leave our ideas of grandeur and pursuits of riches to live out God’s plan for us, we become better people: kinder, more caring and less selfish. Our focus changes, and our attention is drawn to a rich, full life with God. Surely, this is far better than the busy, materialistic one that leaves us feeling empty and seeking more?
I invite you to consider your inner being and state. What would your life look like
if you had a conversion, if you accepted the invitation that Jesus makes, “Follow me, and I will make you into fishers of people.”?
