Jesus often spoke about his mission of preparing others to be sent out into the world to spread the Good News. Now, with the disciples, he is formalising that process.
Jesus breathes the Holy Spirit on his disciples and tells them to go out and teach just as he has been doing. The Holy Spirit, Jesus's presence, will always be present
in and with them. They are not only to believe but also to be witnesses to others.
Jesus has faith in them, the same faith the Father has in him. He gives them the authority to preach the Gospel, convert sinners, establish church communities, and bring people to Jesus for redemption. Their experience in the world will be much like his—they will face hatred and persecution, but they will also be met with love and acceptance.
Our mission is like that of the disciples and of Jesus before them.
We have been given the treasure of the Gospel and the trust to share it. We are called to teach others about God and to bring people to Jesus for salvation.
In what ways do you carry out God’s mission? How can you multiply the treasure of the Good News?
