One of our subscribers recently commented about these daily “Encounters with the word”. They noted that the reflective questions are more helpful than “words, words, words.” As these offerings are not meant to be a mini homily or a summarised sermon, I will try to offer more opportunities for reflection and encountering Jesus this week.
In this verse, Jesus claims to be the good (καλός) shepherd. In Ancient Greek, καλός (kalos) meant “beauty.” In modern Greek, it means “good.” The Greek word kalos is used to translate a number of words from Hebrew to indicate that which is beautiful, intrinsically attractive, and morally good: beautiful, handsome, excellent, eminent, choice, surpassing, precious, useful, suitable, commendable, and admirable. Jesus is suggesting that he is the ideal, perfect
example.
How would you describe yourself? If your description was translated into Greek, would the word kalos appear?
How do you compare to the good shepherd? Can you name those for whom you are the ideal, perfect example? How does the thought of laying down your life for another make you feel?
