Jesus is comparing a good shepherd and a hired hand. What does being a hired hand mean to you? When you read these verses, what images are evoked?
We know that Jesus is the good shepherd, the perfect example to follow. He loves and cares for us, is faithful, and is ready to lay down his life for us—all this in the good and bad times.
Jesus does not turn his back on us, ever.
What of the hired hand? How invested is he in this job of being a shepherd? He is protective and caring when things go well but takes off when the going gets tough. How can you relate to this?
Today, you are invited to consider whether you are a good shepherd or perhaps more like the hired hand. How can you follow the example of
the good shepherd more closely?
