Unsurprisingly, the people asked Jesus, “What must we do to do the works of God?” For most people, knowing that we live in a way that pleases God and can be considered a “good” person would be wonderful. This drives us to be faithful in relationships, pay our taxes, earn an honest living, do charitable work, and so on.
Undoubtedly,
all these good actions and attitudes bring a smile to God. Behind every genuinely good interaction is an element of love. Given that God is love, we can say these may be ways of showing something of God to our world. But it is also important to remember that we cannot earn God’s favour. Thinking or acting in a way that is love will not earn us points to get into heaven.
What does God require of us?
Today’s scripture reminds us that all God requires of us is to believe in Jesus, who saves us from all that drives a wedge between God and us. Does that mean the good things we do are of no use? Not at all. Any action or attitude coming from a space of faith in Jesus, who lives in us, leads us to eternal life with God.
Does your faith include inviting Jesus into all areas of your life? Where might you want Jesus to be more
present with you?
Notice places and times when you feel uneasy, overstretched or lonely. Talk to and meet Jesus when these touch your life.
