St. Luke brings the two mothers-to-be together so that both may praise God's active presence in their lives.
As Mary arrives at the house of Zechariah and Elizabeth, she calls out to Elizabeth. Just as the Holy Spirit acts to have Jesus grow in Mary’s womb, the Holy Spirit inspires the baby, John, to leap for joy in Elizabeth’s
womb. This inspires Elizabeth, too. She immediately recognises that Mary also has a God-given baby.
Mary is affirmed with such joy! Elizabeth is also affirmed by John’s leap for joy in her womb at the sound of Mary’s voice. Can you imagine the joy and gratitude these two God-fearing and beautiful women felt as they greeted each other?
They could each tell their stories and
listen to their beloved cousins, who have each experienced gifting beyond belief. Sharing stories enhances the sharer's identity and gifts the listeners.
Elizabeth now has Mary's support for three months until John is born. Mary will learn a great deal about pregnancy and birth from her cousin. These two women will pray together for the strength to fulfil what God has set in motion. They will need to gain enormous strength
for their journeys ahead. As mothers, they will trust and keep God close as God provides for them.
What has God promised me?
How do I feel when someone listens to my story and shares my concerns and joys?
Do I share the fullness of my stories with God?
Do I trust God to hear the whole story, offer compassion and love,
and strengthen me as I walk my life journey?
Reflect on the following thoughts:
God has chosen me to bear fruit for him,
God has chosen you to bear fruit for him,
God has chosen us to bear fruit for him.
