Inspired by the Holy Spirit, Mary continues in her song to tell us that God comes not to the powerful, proud, and wealthy but to the help of the poor, hungry, and marginalised. This will be Jesus’ mission: to fulfil the promises made to the Israelites since Abraham. A faithful God who prefers those at the bottom of society's priorities!
God chooses each of us to keep to these same priorities. We, like Mary, are chosen to keep pointing to God, to imitate Jesus, to reach out to those in need, to act justly, to offer dignity, and to not accumulate excessively for ourselves and our own. We are called to see ourselves as part of the whole and be responsible for playing our parts in bringing everyone and all creation to oneness with God. God desires that we recognise all interconnectedness, having all been
created in overflowing love. God desires that all the ‘sparks of love’ should be united.
This Gospel text is in celebration of the Feast of the Assumption when Mary was taken up into heaven, body and soul. She is a sign of hope as she shows us what God intends for those who freely follow Jesus. “Mindful of his mercy”, we can depend on compassion and forgiveness when we fail and dare to get up again and again. God’s mercy never
runs out, and nothing is impossible for God to forgive. Let us consent to God’s invitation to divine union. May we be one now as we each fulfil the mission for which we are created.
Reflect on the following thoughts:
God has chosen me to bear fruit for him,
God has chosen you to bear fruit for him,
God has chosen us to bear
fruit for him.
