In this text, we see Jesus confronted by the Pharisees and some scribes about keeping Jewish laws. The Pharisees and scribes had seen some of Jesus’ disciples eating with unclean hands. They wanted a reason to accuse Jesus, so they followed Jesus from one place to the next, observing what Jesus had been doing. They were suspicious of all the good and holy deeds Jesus performed.
Some people might not be Christian but are complimentary of Jesus. They will say Jesus was a great teacher and a good prophet. However, not everyone shares this warm attitude towards Jesus. In scripture, we learn that the Pharisees and scribes were often hostile towards Jesus. We see this in the Gospel text. The Pharisees and some scribes came from Jerusalem to gather around Jesus to catch him out. They didn’t gather around Jesus to receive
his teaching or listen to his preaching.
I am reminded of the times when I have failed to see the goodness and holiness surrounding me. However, my inability to recognise the Lord's presence does not remove it. This may have been the case for the Pharisees and scribes.
Today, I invite you to reflect on situations in your life when you have struggled to find the
presence and invitation of the Lord. Think about the people whose words and actions you have watched closely and judged. Ask the Lord to help you see these situations and people as the Lord sees them.
