This week's Gospel story is what I like to call the "sandwich" miracle. It begins and ends with the healing of Jairus' daughter. In the middle is the story of the woman who is healed simply by touching Jesus' garment. This is a rich text with many themes we can reflect on. This week, we will look at the themes of the crowds, lamentation, prophetic action, healing and fear.
The story begins with Jesus in the midst of "great crowds". Let's take a moment to visualise this scene. Think back to your own experience of being in a great crowd that had gathered to see some famous figure. I remember my experience in Braamfontein when I went to see the Springboks’ victory parade after their win at the Rugby World Cup in France. There were thousands of people pressed close together. The air was thick with anticipation as we waited for
them. As they approached and drove past, the energy became almost frantic. People were screaming, clapping, waving flags, lifting up their hands, and singing songs. The Springboks themselves were full of energy and enthusiasm; they waved, they cheered, and they blew kisses to the crowds.
Imagine yourself in a similar situation. See the crowd, hear the chatter and celebrations, and feel the movement of people around you.
Visualise the figure that you have come to see. How are they looking? How do they respond to the energy of the crowd?
What is attractive about the figure that the crowd has come to see? What brings them to him? What brings you to join the crowd?
Immerse yourself in the moment. Be aware of your thoughts and feelings as you
experience the crowds and the figure you and they have come to see.
Jesus is an attractive figure. He draws people to himself. What is it about him that is attractive? How do you feel about the crowds that gather around him? Do you long to be part of them? Near to him? Or to watch from a distance?
Take a moment to reflect on this image of Jesus in the crowds. Talk to Jesus
about what you think and feel at this moment.
