We relate differently to Jesus at various stages in our lives. Children relate to Jesus in a way that adults don’t. As we grow older, our relationship with Jesus becomes more personal as he invites us into friendship with him. In this friendship, we need to remember that it is Jesus who takes the initiative. We respond when we want to, and Jesus does not tell us or force us to respond in a
certain manner to his initiative; that is all on us.
The people from Jesus’ hometown responded with astonishment to his teaching in the Synagogue. They were surprised by the message or the teacher. Remember, Jesus returned as a different person. He had been performing miracles, healing the sick, and raising the dead. Could they have been astonished at something else they had seen and heard from or about Jesus?
Like the people in the synagogue, we might have been astonished by Jesus’ invitations, which initially seem to challenge us. As our friendship with Jesus evolves and grows, the demands of the friendship increase as well. The same is true for all of our other genuine friendships and relationships. Being friends with Jesus transforms us. This may not be what we want and may lead us to be astonished at Jesus.
What is your relationship with Jesus like at the moment? Reflecting on your life at the moment, which of Jesus’ teachings do you feel drawn to embrace and practice? Why?
