Jesus had compassion on this crowd. In other translations of this text, he was “deeply moved.” Just as they recognised Jesus, Jesus recognised a common need in this group. He sensed their feelings of being lost, without a leader or a guide; “Sheep without a shepherd.”
He was moved by their condition, which St. Mark earlier
identified as lacking caring and adequate leadership. Perhaps Jesus showed compassion because he was angry at these people's treatment due to the inadequacy of the religious, moral and political leaders at that time.
Jesus’ response was to teach them through words and actions. Not only would he restore their hope, but he would also tell and show this crowd how things needed to change. Jesus would feed their souls by teaching them about
the Kingdom of God. He would be the leader that they so desperately needed and were seeking.
In what ways are you compassionate to others? What situations cause you to be “deeply moved” into action and assistance?
