When Jesus is asked what the greatest commandment is, he goes above and beyond. Instead of just giving one commandment, as asked for, he gives two.
After stating that the most important commandment is to love the Lord your God, Jesus says that the second greatest commandment is to love your neighbour as yourself. Again, he quotes from the law (Leviticus 19:18).
According to Jesus, these two commandments are closely linked and even inseparable.
This second commandment from Jesus, rooted in the heart of the first commandment to love God with all your heart, soul, and mind, challenges us to extend compassion, kindness, and empathy to those around us.
The concept of a "neighbour" is not limited to those who share our beliefs, culture,
or social status. Jesus expanded this definition to include everyone, regardless of their differences. In the parable of the Good Samaritan, he illustrated this point by highlighting the compassion of a Samaritan, a marginalised group, towards a Jewish man who had been robbed and beaten.
To love our neighbour as ourselves is to recognise every individual's inherent dignity and worth. It is to treat others with respect, kindness, and understanding. It is to actively
seek opportunities to help those in need, whether through acts of service, words of encouragement, or simply a listening ear.
In a world often divided by prejudice, hatred, and injustice, Jesus' commandment to love our neighbour serves as a beacon of hope. By embracing this principle, we can build bridges of understanding, foster unity, and create a more compassionate society.
Jesus reveals that loving God, our neighbours, and ourselves are all closely linked. By living out of our love of God, we not only bless others but also enrich our lives.
How do you understand the link between loving God, neighbour and yourself? What practical ways can you live out your love for God by expressing love and care for others?
