The widow gave everything she had, trusting in the unknown outcome of her generosity. She could have given one coin, holding the other back in case she needed to buy food. But she didn’t. She gave it all.
The image and action of this widow make me think of a cyclist, a mountain climber, or anyone participating in an endurance sport.
To succeed in these and many other sporting endeavours, the athlete must give it all and be “all in.” Training, diet, and participation require total dedication and strict discipline. There is no room for half-measures.
Is our discipleship like this? Are we “all in”? In the past few weeks, the texts from Mark’s Gospel have addressed commitment or the lack thereof. Some people were ready to drop everything and follow Jesus; others had
conditions and were “hedging their bets”, and some weren’t interested. What does discipleship involve?
Take time today to reflect on your discipleship journey. Are you “all in”? Does God need to meet your conditions before you commit? Perhaps you think you are “sitting on the fence”. Talk to God about what your discipleship journey should look like.
