When Jesus and his disciples (the leaders) were alone again after this encounter with the Pharisees, the disciples questioned Jesus about it.
Jesus gently takes them back to the commandment about adultery. God intended the bond of husband and wife to be not only a partnership or working relationship but a new entity, a new human
being. This new entity or body reflects the image of the Trinity God – three persons in perfect love, harmony and unity.
Just as we choose to love God, we have a choice of whom we marry. It is a choice we should take very seriously. Marriage allows us to experience the Trinity’s togetherness, joy, blessedness, peace and harmony. (This is the circumstance in which God wishes vulnerable children to grow up.) If we believe God has called
us into marriage with our spouse and find this blessing, we will work hard to preserve and prioritise that relationship.
The commandment about adultery is to guard and preserve the sacredness and unity of marriage and to encourage communities to understand, respect and encourage marriage partners in their ups and downs. It becomes complicated and hurtful when we make mistakes, but God is always there to help us return to his
heart and law.
Where do you find your heart and mind about marriage and adultery?
Turn to Jesus, discuss this with him and accept his desire to draw you closer to his loving heart in whatever your circumstances.
