This week, we will be looking at the story of the rich young man. He ran up to Jesus, knelt before him, and asked Jesus his important question: “Good master, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” This suggests that he believes Jesus is more than just a teacher or rabbi. He expresses in his haste, posture, and the significance of his question that he truly believes that Jesus, who is someone
‘more’, can supply the answer to that which he is seeking. He also suggests that deep within himself, he knows he is lacking something. Perhaps we, at times, have that sense of seeking something more. Our lives, as they are, lack something. Will Jesus answer?
He wants a different quality of life, a second chance, a new beginning, a new day. He wants a life which allows him to “inherit eternal life” and heal the sense of something
missing within. We realise that superficial wants do not complete us. There are deeper needs within and available to us when we go beneath the top awareness and seek the essence of who we are and where God is present. God will undoubtedly draw us to himself and guide our journey. Will we look into our hearts to find God – a bit like running to Jesus, kneeling and asking our most essential questions? Like the rich young man, we ask what we must do to unite with God.
What are the deep questions within me? Stay with these with Jesus.
How do I move from where I am stuck to the possibilities of where I might be?
What must I do to find myself again?
What must I do to be more fully alive?
Would I like someone to support me as I come to Jesus and have a conversation? Who might that
be?
