Jesus recognises that this rich young man is seeking fullness of life. He does not need possessions, property or wealth. What he needs is quality of life. This may be the type of question we would ask, too. It comes, perhaps, when we experience a sense of being lost, empty, powerless or hitting a ‘brick wall’. It is about life, about being more alive.
We have heard the expression, “only one thing necessary,” in the story of Mary and Martha. When Martha objects to Mary not helping, Jesus consoles her, stating that Mary has chosen the “one thing” necessary. (Luke 10:42) That one thing may be to recognise and be connected to something greater than ourselves: to have a relationship with Jesus, sitting at his feet and having a conversation, receiving his love and compassion and offering ourselves in
joy.
This young man lacks the “one thing” necessary. As Jesus looks at the young man, he loves him, even before he has made his choice – Jesus loves us and understands us just as we are in each moment. We also have to make difficult decisions at times. Jesus does not close the door but offers ongoing invitations in love. We are invited to take the first small step when ready.
What is the “one thing” I need in my life now?
What is Jesus calling me to let go of?
What small step can I take today?
“What does love look like? It has the hands to help others. It has the feet to hasten to the poor and needy. It has eyes to see misery and want. It has the ears to hear the sighs and sorrows of people. That is what
love looks like.” Augustine of Hippo.“
