This week, we reflect on the Gospel story, in which James and John ask to sit on the right and left side of Jesus when he comes into his glory. We know that the story ends with embarrassment and a rude awakening for them.
At this point, the disciples do not get what Jesus is about. They know he is a great spiritual leader and seem to
realise he is God's Son. But their understanding of what that means is still lacking.
They are thinking from a paradigm of power and dominance. They see Jesus as someone who will attain earthly or political power. They want a share of that power.
This understanding and desire leads them to ask for their desires in an entitled way. “We want you to give us whatever we ask
for.” This reminds me of how I asked for things from my parents as a child…
I wonder what tone of voice Jesus uses when he responds. Is it a tone of frustration? Why don’t they get it? Is it a tone of understanding? They are not there yet, but they will be one day.
Think back over your journey with Christ. What have been your areas of
misunderstanding and entitlement? How did Jesus respond to you?
