This is what James and John want from Jesus. They want positions of prominence when he comes into his glory. What does this request tell us about their understanding of Jesus and the Kingdom of God?
Firstly, it shows that their image of God’s power is one of authority, power and glory. They envision Jesus taking over and taking the
lead. He is to be an earthly king, glorified.
Secondly, it shows their desire to be a part of this glory. They want to be near to the glorified Jesus. They want a share in his power and his glory. I detect in them a desire for dominance.
Where does the desire to dominate come from? It is a desire to control ourselves, others and the world around us. How often do we become
frustrated and angry when things are not going our way? What does this say about our image of God?
Can we see ourselves in these brothers this week? What is my image of God? What does his glorification look like to me? In what ways do I desire to be in control of myself, others and God?
