Bartimaeus attracted Jesus’ attention by shouting out to him. Jesus stopped, listened to his cries and told those around him to call Bartimaeus. The crowd's response is interesting, “Take courage; get up; Jesus is calling you.”
Getting up to meet Jesus when he calls us is not always easy. It demands courage. The crowd knew this, too.
What did it mean for Bartimaeus to take courage? What does it mean for us, for our journey with the Lord?
For Bartimaeus, it meant trusting in his faith. I do not doubt that he was scared when Jesus called him, as we all are, but he did not let his fear overcome his faith. He responded in obedience to Jesus’ invitation, not knowing why he was being called. He relied on the guidance and strength of God, even in uncertainty.
How are we invited today to show courage on our journey with the Lord? What fears must we overcome to get out of our comfort zones to meet Jesus? Spend time asking the Lord for the grace to be courageous in your discipleship.
