“Put out into the deep…” This is Jesus’ invitation to the fishermen. They have worked hard all night and caught nothing. They are tired and frustrated. Perhaps they are a little frazzled that this dynamic preacher has adopted their boat as his pulpit. Yet, out to the deep they go.
Many of us involved in ministry know what it feels
like to give our all and achieve minimal results. Sometimes, it can feel like our work has been entirely in vain. In these moments, Jesus invites us to even greater depths.
Simon Peter decides to heed Jesus’ invitation even though he is fairly certain that they will get more of the same. Sometimes, we have to try to trust in God’s call even though it makes no sense.
What
makes this sort of trust possible? During the night’s failed fishing, the disciples were alone. But, in the new day, having listened to his preaching, they went into the deep with Jesus. We can trust Jesus because we know that he is with us always.
How do I feel when my ministry feels fruitless? Can I find Jesus calling me to greater depths in these moments? Can I trust Jesus is with me as he calls me to put out into the
deep?
