In this week’s Gospel text, Jesus uses metaphorical imagery to warn God’s people to repent and take refuge under God’s wings.
Jesus also reaffirms his commitment to travel to Jerusalem, despite the danger that awaits him there.
Throughout Luke’s Gospel, the
author shows that the rich and powerful will despise and oppose the Messiah. In this verse, it is revealed through the voice of the Pharisees that Herod is plotting to kill Jesus. The implication is obvious, and Jesus’ response reveals his role as the Son of God.
The Pharisees were likely trying to get Jesus to leave the area and not travel to Jerusalem to avoid a violent situation with the authorities there.
This is not the first (or last) time that Jesus faced opposition and even death threats in Luke’s Gospel.
Those who follow God’s ways earnestly will not be exempt from opposition and difficulties. They might even face persecution because of their faith.
Where have you faced opposition for your
faith in Christ? How could you remain committed to your relationship with God regardless of opposition and hardship, as Jesus did when he journeyed to Jerusalem?
